Tithes And Offering Verse And Explanation
The Bible in Deuteronomy 12:5-6 says, “But you are to seek the place the Lord your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name there for his dwelling. To that place you must go; there bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, what you have vowed to give and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.”
You might be thinking that why should we be offering if the gospel is free? The gospel is free but the means to carry it out requires an offering. Our God is orderly and expects his temple to be built in a certain manner through the vision that he gives to the pastor of the church.
So if you decide to go to a mega-church where the music is on point, there is a church building, nice chairs, beautiful decoration, there is even food for guests, think to yourself, who has paid for all those things?
Someones money has definitely paid for it, or someone has made a donation. But the point is that it did not just fall from the sky. Offering and tithes are necessary to ensure that the church is maintained, continues to grow and impact more lives.
Also, when you are investing in God’s work, God also invests in you. That is why the bible in Matthew 6:31-33 says, “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Malachi 3:8-12 says:
“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the LORD Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the LORD Almighty.
This means that when we rob God of tithes and offering, we attract curses and we ultimately rob ourselves of God’s favour. However when we offer, the affairs of the House of the Lord (church) are taken care of and God pours out His blessing.

Importance Of Giving Offering In Church
Exodus 35:21 summarises the importance of giving offerings in church. It says, “And they came, everyone whose heart stirred him, and everyone whose spirit moved him, and brought the Lord’s contribution to be used for the tent of meeting, and for its service, and for the holy garments.”
1. It helps build the church
In Exodus 35:21 it is clear that the Lord’s contribution was to be used for the tent of meeting which means the building of the church.
If you read Haggai 1, God was complaining that people were only focused on building their houses, while the house of the Lord was in ruins. He wanted a house that He could take pleasure in and be honoured.
So the importance of giving offerings in church is that it makes it possible to build a dignified House for the Lord.
This is what the Bible says in Haggai 1:4,8
Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord.
2. It pays for the services
The costs of running a church are similar to the cost of running a huge household. The offering ensures that the monthly running expenses of the church are covered.
Some of the expenses or services include water and lights, rental, furniture, sound, food, cleaning, rates and taxes, workers at the church, sanitation, transportation, etc.
3. Remuneration for the priests

4. God blesses you abundantly

The Bible in 2 Corinthians 9 encourages giving in the house of the Lord because it allows God to bless you abundantly, and supply all your needs, which allows you to continue doing good deeds.
2 Corinthians 9:6-8 says:

When you offer, it is important to do it with love, because without love, the offering will be in vain. 1 Corinthians 13:1–3 says, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. Another benefit of giving tithes and offerings is that God will prevent miscarriages. This means that when you plant, you will enjoy the fruits or the harvest. When you are pregnant, you will carry to full term. And it also means that an opportunity or a promise will not fall through.
Types Of Offerings And Their Significance
There are many types of offerings in the bible but here I will only list a few. The Bible in Deuteronomy 12:5-6 says, “But you are to seek the place the Lord your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name there for his dwelling. To that place you must go; there bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, what you have vowed to give and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.”
1. Burnt offerings
The first type of offering is a burnt offering. A burnt offering is a sacrificial offering that has the potential to soften the heart of God.
After Noah came out from the boat he sacrificed burnt offerings and God vowed never to destroy all living creatures.
Genesis 8:20-21
“Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.”
Another person who made burnt offerings was Abraham after God requested him to sacrifice his own son. And because he agreed, although God stopped him, God promised to bless him.

2. Tithes
Another type of offering is tithes. Tithe means a tenth or 10% of what one makes. When you offer tithes, you are acknowledging that it is the Lord who gives you the ability to produce wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18).
That is why Leviticus 27:30 says, “Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord.”
3. Freewill offering

Exodus 35:10 talks about rendering of services as freewill offering “All who are skilled among you are to come and make everything the Lord has commanded
Exodus 35:29, 36:3
“All the Israelite men and women who were willing brought to the Lord freewill offerings for all the work the Lord through Moses had commanded them to do.”
Another scripture says that freewill offering should be in proportion to the blessings the Lord has given you.
“Then celebrate the Festival of Weeks to the Lord your God by giving a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the Lord your God has given you.” – Deuteronomy 16:10
However, Luke 21:1-4 says, “Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.’”
This means that although the rich were giving in proportion to what they had, the widow gave the most because she gave all she had, although it was the least.
4. Vow or pledge offering
Another type of offering is a vow or pledge offering. Sometimes at church you can commit yourself to offer a certain amount, which is called a pledge offering.
While at times you can vow to God to make an offering if he answers your prayer. But when it comes to a vow offering, you can never go back on your word you have to fulfil it.
Hannah made a vow to God that if He blessed her with a child, she would give him to the Lord all the days of his life.
1 Samuel 1:11 says, “And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”
Numbers 30:2
“When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.”
5. Firstfruit offerings
Firstfruit offering is when you offer the first fruit of your produce. Today, it would be equivalent to your first salary or the first portion of the increase.
“When you come into the land which I give you and reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest.” —Leviticus 23:10
By so doing you are fulfilling the scripture in 2 Corinthians 9:10 which says, “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.”
The bible in Genesis 4:4 says, “And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering”
